The nuthatch's name is actually derived from the term “Nut Hack". Many nuthatches have the habit of taking nuts or seeds, wedging them in a hole and “hacking" them open with their small chisel like beak. White breasted nuthatches prefer deciduous forests.   This is contrary to most other species of nuthatches which prefer coniferous forests.

“What’s Up Doc" was a fun title suggested by Jean Van Dyke. White breasted nuthatches are one of her favorite birds.
